Italian Migration Stories in the Gympie Region
Why a research project on Italian Australian heritage, migration stories, and cultural contributions to the Gympie Region?
A few answers are worth sharing. To begin with, when I created the project, I was simply curious. Curious about the modern history of the region that has become the background of my life for over a decade now. Because my darling daughter, born in Gympie and fluent in Italian, might one day want to know.
I had applied for a grant to Gympie Regional Council in March 2024. I was a successful recipient, I couldn’t believe it. The best part wasn’t the money (though it did help keep my husband at peace with all the hours I was dedicating to the project). It was the comment from the assessors that truly made me happy:
“This is a great project, with relevance over many communities.”
Behind the Pages
Self-publishing has taught me that publishing a book requires much more than writing.
For me, the most rewarding stage is the research. I enjoy immersing myself in archives, books, interviews and historical records, following clues and uncovering stories that have often been forgotten. I sometimes describe the process as becoming a historical detective, connecting fragments of information until a larger picture begins to emerge.
Once the research is complete, a different challenge begins: how can that knowledge be shared in a way that is engaging, accessible and meaningful?
From concept development and writing to project management and creative direction, I enjoy every stage of the publishing process. I design the page layout, prepare the artwork for print, refine typography and margins, create covers, format manuscripts and oversee production until the final publication is ready.
Being an independent publisher has allowed me to develop a broad range of skills and a practical understanding of what it takes to transform an idea into a professionally published book.
The Vision

Genealogy is more than tracing roots or building family trees. When put together, it reveals the family’s forest or, as Australians might say, the family’s bush. It helps explain the evolution of towns, regions, and entire states.
It illuminates the paths walked before us, stitching together lives into a coherent narrative that predates us and will continue long after we’re gone.
Looking back gives us what we need most: a sense of belonging… and responsibility. We are part of a continuum.
The Gympie Region
The Gympie Region is one of Queensland's most diverse regional areas, extending from the fertile Mary Valley to the coastal communities of Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove.
More Than Spaghetti explores one chapter of that history, documenting the stories, challenges and contributions of Italian migrants whose lives became part of the region's cultural landscape.
The history of the Gympie Region did not begin with European settlement; for tens of thousands of years, the Kabi Kabi, Wakka Wakka and Butchulla Peoples have lived on, cared for and maintained a deep cultural and spiritual connection to these lands and waters.
