Why read with children?

Reading is one of the greatest gifts we can offer a child.

A book introduces new words, but it also introduces new ways of thinking and seeing. Through stories, children learn to imagine, ask questions, recognise emotions and understand perspectives different from their own.

Sharing a book creates moments of connection between generations. It encourages curiosity, conversation and a lifelong love of learning, while helping children develop language, confidence and empathy.

Every story is a reminder to explore. Sometimes the journey begins in a child's imagination, sometimes it begins in their own community.

Every location featured in the story exists: the plants, animals and landmarks can be found in Rainbow Beach, making the book a reminder to explore the real world beyond its pages.

Welcome to Rainbow Beach, a regional coastal town in the South East Queensland

A Rainbow Story with Sofia & Matisse was created to celebrate Rainbow Beach, its natural beauty and to tribute the rich cultural heritage of the Butchulla People. Through a simple adventure, children are encouraged to ask questions, explore nature and appreciate the people and stories that make every community unique.

Curiosity and belonging

Learning through exploration

Sofia and Matisse have multicultural background; they encourage children to look closely, ask questions and discover the value of the place they call home. The story also opens space for conversations about difference, identity and belonging.

The book introduces young readers to Rainbow Beach, its natural environment and the cultural knowledge connected to Country. Learning happens through observation, movement, play and conversation.

Beautifully illustrated in full colour by Alessia Castiglioni, the book introduces readers to the landscapes, native wildlife and community of Rainbow Beach while respectfully recognising the Butchulla People as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the story unfolds.

Always give them the gift of knowledge.
